Wine Advocate 91 points - Dark and chewy, with a green olive note prominent in the mix. Offers intensity and presence, letting the ripe blackberry flavors come through on the long finish. Shiraz and Petite Sirah. Best after 2014. 900 cases made. -HS
(60% shiraz and 40% petite sirah): Inky purple. Deeply pitched aromas of cassis, dark chocolate, licorice and pipe tobacco, with a peppery nuance adding lift. Broad and fleshy on the palate, offering lush black and blue fruit flavors and a touch of spicecake. Big and burly, finishing with strong punch, chewy tannins and echoing spiciness.
A blend of 60% Shiraz and 40% Petite Sirah, the 2010 Imprimata Proprietary Red is a deep garnet-purple color and shows off aromas of dried mulberries, Chinese dried plums and creme de cassis with nuances of Indian spices, mocha and cedar. Very big, full and rich in the mouth, it has a slight raisin character supported by crisp acid and medium levels of chewy tannins before finishing long and a little hot. Drink it from 2014 to 2022+. 91+ Points

Wine maker notes
Imprimata aims to be in the best expression of this McLaren Vale vineyard. In the case of the inaugural vintage, it is a blend of 80% Shiraz and 20% Petite Sirah aged for 15 months in 2-3 year old French and American Hogsheads. The Tahbilk clone of Shiraz (one of two clones planted at the property) comes from the oldest winery in Victoria and tends to produce wines that are reminiscent of the northern Rhone revealing more lifted violet and spice character. Petite Sirah is naturally higher in acid tannin and color bringing structure and minerality to the blend. The wine is made by Ben Glaetzer who shares Hammershlag’s vision of wines that walk the line between power and elegance always finding balance between the two.

Producer
An imprimatur (from Latin, “let it be released”) is, in essence, a declaration, an endorsement. In what can be viewed as the ultimate endorsement of Australia’s viniferous strengths, Benjamin Hammerschlag has elected to establish roots in the country. Concurrent with his passion for seeking out Australia’s best wines, Hammerschlag began his quest for the perfect piece of property for his own wine in 2006. His search ended at one of the highest points in McLaren Vale in the sub-district of Seaview, known for producing fruit with a track record for the highest quality. The Imprimata vineyard consists of ironstone and clay over limestone and benefits from cool maritime breezes each afternoon. Upon securing this location, Hammerschlag got to work in the vineyard selecting 2 clones of Shiraz: 1654, which is very typical of South Australia and Tabhilk, sourced from the oldest winery in Victoria and more reminiscent of the northern Rhone. In addition to Shiraz, the vineyard is also planted with Grenache and Petite Sirah, a varietal that is naturally higher in acid, tannin and color, thereby enhancing the wine’s mineral character and providing structure to the blend. Hammerschlag’s goal, naturally, has been to produce the best wine from this particular location. To do so, he is collaborating with winemaker Ben Glaetzer. With a relationship rooted in 10 years of friendship, Ben Glaetzer and Benjamin Hammerschlag share a common vision of producing wines that while they exhibit a distinct ripeness, richness and power also are balanced and vibrant. Hammerschlag describes his role as that of managing the grapes along the way but ultimately letting this special place dictate the outcome while Glaetzer nurtures the grapes to the best possible expression of this terroir.
